Day in the Life Sessions

A father works with his daughter on potty training during a documentary family photography session.

what are these sessions about?

Now that I'm a parent of a moody, sweet, crabby, hilarious, fun kiddo myself, I realize that the photos I cherish the most of my family are the ones where we are not dressed up posing for the camera, but the ones I happen to catch of us in real life. Because these are the moments that you forget -- that pass by so quickly. Those two front teeth as nubs inthe gums, the way your child holds his ear when he's nervous or the way your kids snuggle up for bedtime stories? THOSE are the memories I want to preserve for you.

These sessions are not meant to capture your next holiday card photo (although they might...), but instead are meant to capture your family as it is right at this moment, bumps, bruises, laughter and all. While they work for all types of families, they are most successful with families of small children.

why is this kind of session important?

Because not only does this type of session capture real life (not instagram life), but it also will capture all of the members of the family interacting. If your house is anything like mine, we have a gazillion photos of certain family members -- that would be the ones not holding the camera. But we have very few images of me (the family photographer), interacting with the kiddo. This is meant to change that for you.

how it works

I will come to your house for roughly 20-24 hours. I will eat with you, sleep in your home (couches are fine!) and try my best to be unobtrusive, polite and maybe even fun. You are essentially making me a member of the family for this time period, and I promise to be on my best behavior.

I will arrive before dinner and get to know the kids while my camera is put away. I'll eat with you guys and then pull out my camera after dinner to take photos of last-minute play times, bath time and bedtime. Then, I'll wake up with your family and get photos of the grumpy bed-head kids brushing their teeth (or, if it's like my household, lying about how they promise they already brushed their teeth), morning snuggles in bed, eating breakfast and playing.

I'll get shots of ALL OF YOU interacting, and I'll likely get some great shots of tantrums. Yes, you read that right. I'll pack up and leave when I feel like I've captured everyone (usually around 2 pm or before nap time).
