So this month, instead of my buddy Nyberg and I going out to dinner, we went to lunch so she could explore the downtown food carts. We intended to hit up Smack Shack for lobster, but they were closed for truck repair, so we went to Hola Arepa instead. Have y'all eaten there yet? Because wow, is that chicken avocado arepa amazing. Ah-may-zing. Go there, now -- before they close for winter.Anyway, the trouble with eating at food trucks today was it was COLD* outside, and as soon as our food was ready, we headed inside to warm up. It was at this time, while we were eating inside the US Bank building, that I saw the window washers above us. (A very long explanation for the photo, I realize.)*OK OK,, so it wasn't cold per se (it would have been considered downright hot in February), but it was in the 50s and I wasn't wearing a jacket or scarf or anything and we were in the shade and it was windy. I know, I know. It is my favorite time of year -- I just wasn't dressed for it.
Today was the day! I woke up and ran over to Target a few minutes before opening so I could pick up a few of the Missoni pieces *right* when they went on sale. I was startled to get out of my car and see a Jaguar parked next to me. Um, can't remember the last time I saw a Jag in the Target parking lot. Then as I approached the door I noticed the line. It was only 10-15 people deep, but still... a line?As the doors opened, I headed straight for home goods because I didn't want any clothes, just a rug, towel, blanket and one bowl for me, please. When I got to the bedding department, I witnessed a woman sweeping the entire contents of one shelf into her cart. Um, hi. There are like 8 of us here. Can we be civil and look it over? From there it got kinda crazy. People realized that we were amongst eBay shoppers, so they started grabbing anything Missoni, then once their cart was full they would move to another area to evaluate the goods and see if they wanted it. You know what it was like? It was like Mood on Project Runway.Anyway, I got everything I came for except the blanket, but I had a good friend shopping at the store in Woodbury, and she picked it up for me. GOOD FRIEND. On my way home, I stopped at another Target to see if they had any tights or other stuff that I missed out on seeing, but that Target was sold out of everything as well. And then I got home and I heard the Target website was down. Holy cow, was this a frenzy or what? The photo is of the small bowl that I bought for myself. In the background is a "votive dish" that I plan on storing my makeup brushes in. I hear they are going to be restocking the stores again soon. Better get there early, kids.
It was my first day back at work in more than a week, and I thought ending the day with a good yoga class would be smart. And man, was I right. I took Mere (who hadn't practiced in a very long time) to a TaraNa -- this studio in South Minneapolis that I keep hearing great things about, but that I had not visited.Wow, was this a wonderful idea. Not only was the studio fantastic, but we were the only two in class, which is a rarity for sure. So we ended up with a fabulous private lesson full of adjustments from the wonderful Jeffrey. After class, I took the long drive home around the lake with all the windows down enjoying the breeze, Sigur Ros and the moonlight. Perfect end to the day.
This cutie here went to brunch with me today as we finalized our wedding photos from a few weeks ago. Because of my trip, we hadn't seen each other in more than 10 days, and we normally hang out at least a few times a week -- so much catching up and laughter ensued. We, of course, talked photography and design and then trash TV weaved its way into the mix as well. It was really good to focus on the normal day-to-day stuff for a few hours. And? We combined our photos into one big take. You can (and should) check it out here.
Today I got to shoot these two getting married. It was a really fun one to photograph because... wait for it... they had their DOG serve as the ring bearer! In fact, it was tough for me not to choose an image of the pup instead. But I really liked this moment, so the dog will have to wait. Can you even imagine if I ever wanted Memphis as a ring bearer? She would probably eat the rings. Merlin, however, would serve just like the prince that he is.
We got up early today to hit the road and get back home. It was really tough to leave Jamie's mom. I know that today and the rest of this week will be remarkably more difficult without us there to distract her, and I know she has so much to figure out and get done, and it's really hard to think of her struggling at all. But she's a tough cookie, and I'm sure she'll get through this all right. I just wish we could help her more.We left Kansas City a little later than expected, and we hit a ton of construction on the road, which made for a very slow travel day. Oh, and btw, this new Kia Jamie got? Wow is it comfortable. It is rare for me to sit in a car for seven hours straight and not have any back pain. If you're looking into a new SUV, I gotta say, I am just loving this Sorento (and sadly, no I'm not getting paid to say so).But we got home around 6 and enjoyed a big plate of delicious BBQ that we brought back with us before unpacking and going to pick up our collie, who we missed tremendously when we were gone. Sadly, I'm not sure he would say the same. He got to stay with his Aunt Nancy, and wow does she have an amazing back yard and other dogs and she feeds them much more interesting things (like raw heart! and liver! and other gross organs!). So we are pretty lame to return to, but nonetheless we still caught him kissing Memphis' face. BUSTED.Oh yeah. And I should tell you about the photo, eh? I shot this at a bathroom break in the middle of Iowa. I loved all of the pumpkins in the back of this truck in front of the Amish store. I did not like the anti-Obama sticker, so I cropped it out. Creative license, you know.
This is Zack -- and he has endured being Memphis' playmate for the week. At first he was a little nervous about her throwing down her paws at his sides with her butt in the air and her tail wagging, but later he got used to it. He's the first cat she has ever played with, and watching them together this week was pretty entertaining. But you know what is even more entertaining? Going car shopping with my mother-in-law. We are hoping she will get something a little more reliable as her current vehicle is almost 10 years old. So today we were just looking to get an idea of what she likes. And do you know what is most important to her? 1) The back seat 2) The trunk 3) The upholstery. Well, wait. No. 1 is probably price, but we were just trying to find a style and brand that she was comfortable with, so we didn't get into price. But watching these salesmen talk up the engine and horsepower and brakes and airbags as she crawled into the backseat to evaluate the legroom was hilarious."Would you like to take this out on the highway, ma'am?""No. Show me the trunk. And this fabric looks cheap."But in all seriousness, this week with her has been really nice. The circumstances, of course, are not ideal, but we haven't spent this much time together... ever, probably. And despite the sadness surrounding the past week, I am so glad we had this much time together.
Today we took a break from all the business and headed west to Lawrence. It was a gorgeous day, and we started off by meeting up with one of our favorite professors. It was fun to see her and catch up on all the changes around school (and on her travels -- who visits Abu Dhabi in July??). Then we walked around campus (and spotted Thomas Robinson -- an esteemed member of the basketball team for those of you not in the know) before heading downtown for lunch and window shopping. But I want to fill you in on this photo. In the bottom right of the photo is Danforth Chapel. It's a small chapel (holds 90) and that's where Jamie and I were married. Yes, we are dorks who love our school. The building on the left side of the street with the large tower is the Natural History Museum, and next to it is an auditorium where I had many 7:30 am classes. That room is always overheated, and easy to sleep in, as I recall. I also recall that I got bonus points on my Cultural Anthropology final in that building for knowing random Bob Dylan trivia. Who said rock'n'roll wouldn't do me any good? Eh?And the next building down from that is the Kansas Union, where I spent hours and hours in college working to bring bands to campus, and where Jamie and I met. Sappy, yes? You're just gonna have to deal with it. This place makes me all sentimental. And on the far, far left is the football stadium where I have zero good memories because our football team sucked and really, the only sport that matters in Lawrence is basketball anyway.
