This week, I had an early shoot with a lovely family over near the lake. I asked them to come right around sunrise, which I always feel bad about. But seriously, look at that light! It is totally worth getting up a touch early for that gorgeousness right there.I don't know if you can see the morning fog or not, but it was quite lovely. This week has been pretty tough, otherwise. Ezra is having a really hard time with two teeth coming in at once, and I am a bit under the weather with fevers etc and work has been insanely busy (which is great! and stressful! and fun! and hard!). It's nothing major, just a lot of little things. And I read this article which was depressing as hell, but still fascinating. If you have ever thought you should be skinnier for how much you are working out or are eating, you should read this.
Did you guys try to take photos of the blood moon the other day? I didn't, but I've tried in the past to photograph the moon, and I just can't seem to get it right. I really need to practice, and it's on my to-do list. But the night of the super moon, I did head down to the lake to watch the moonrise and I did bring my camera. I didn't put too much thought into it, so I just had the lens that was already mounted (a 35mm), but I loved the reflection on the water in this image. Obviously, not the moon so much (since I cropped it out).I'll try again soon! For your internet shares of the day, this chart from 1927 speaks to my heart. And these are the most beautiful bikes!
This was a bit of a hard week for the boy. He cut his very first tooth (a top one!) and because of that, his appetite was off (which makes him cranky) and he had to get a "real" haircut by a stranger and he had to dress up in a shark costume (which you would think might be fun, but took some serious coaxing). But! He also had some fun. He had his first ride down a slide (which he loved) and he got to eat lots of sauerkraut (which he loves) and he moved into the toddler room at school with the big kids and got to nap on a cot (which he did really well at). Plus, unsurprisingly, he rocked it at school picture day.Photos from the week are below. I'm gonna warn you, those haircut photos are tough. They make me tear up a bit!
The weather was lovely and Magda and I spent lots of time outdoors this week.
Ezra's having to model for a business thing I'm about to announce. This was one of about 4 of 5,000 where he wasn't crying. Dressing up is hard.
Sunday, we went to the park for a picnic. Here he is playing in the fountain -- he loved that part.
Same picnic -- just running around with Dad and Magda.
The kid has gotten really good at communicating what he wants even though he can't talk. Like, crawling back into the stroller and curling up for a nap? Ok. I guess it's time to head back home now.
I love this.
Remember last week when I was designing that book? It came! And it is looooooovely. I know we all look at photos on our phones and computers all day long. But there is something so wonderful about holding a photo in my hands and seeing it on paper. And in a book? Even better! Many people ask me who I use to print my albums, and it really depends on the project. But for things close to my heart, I opt for Pinhole Press and their hardcover books. I love how the images can extend over the binding beautifully, and their printing and paper is delicious. Many people also stop me and ask me where I got the boots I'm wearing in the photo above. They are Fluevogs. I splurged on them about 3.5 years ago, and I have never once regretted it. Comfortable, sturdy and beautiful. For your internet share of the day, I both love and hate the idea of this camera that decides if it will let you snap that photo or not.
Most of my shoots this week are in the evenings, meaning I'm home processing on my computer during the day. This morning I was grabbing another cup of coffee when I noticed the birds were particularly active. I watched for about 10 minutes as they fought and dive bombed and sqawked at each other. Then I remembered that, hey, maybe I should take a photo.I love the interactions you see here! Also? That feeder was full three days ago, so as you can see, they are gobbling it all up for fall. And? Please don't judge me on how dirty my windows are (ick!).Now, for your internet share of the day. I bet you didn't think this was the new, great hostess gift. I had no earthly idea.
Last night, I was fortunate enough to get to photograph Beach House. I really love their music. But their concerts? I dunno. I might be too sober? I might want more movement? Maybe the photographer in me just wants a little action. Like ... a head bob. Or a smile. Or something. Anyway, they are tough for me to shoot. Toward the end of the show, Victoria Legrand finally did let loose and shake her hair for about 10 seconds before going back to stock still again. But, as concert photographers, we are asked to only shoot the first three songs and then stop... so yeah. But I'm showing you this particular image because one of my favorite things to look at while I'm photographing a band up close is their feet. I like to see what socks they are wearing, what their shoes are and what they are drinking. Most of the time, it's water or tea. And beer. Rarely mixed drinks. Anyway, it's just something I like to check out, and sometimes I photograph. If you want to see the rest of the faceless photos from the night, they are up over at City Pages. If you want something more interesting, this made me laugh. It reminds me of how I asked Jamie out on our first date. Sometimes you just have to jump at an opportunity! And this is the halloween costume I really want to get for Ezra, but I won't because it's kinda pricey. BUT OMG SO CUTE.
Fall is right around the corner here in Minneapolis, and I realized I have gone the entire summer without photos of my pretty succulents! What!?! I know! These furry ones are among my favorites, but really I'm just a huge sucker for succulents in general. They cover my porch all summer long. I used to bring them in all winter and nurse them along... and then I would try to bring them out in the summer but they never looked healthy enough and I always just buy more. I know! Wasteful! If any green thumbs out there would like to adopt my urn succulents this year, please let me know. I have a few more weeks before I likely compost them (sad trombone). For your internet shares of the day, here is a photo shoot with Jon Hamm (yum). Or there's this fascinating article about how the economy will change with more freelance workers. My favorite part is this: : "This also means your career success relies solely on you." That right there? That's why I work for myself, ladies and gentlemen. And lastly, this is gonna be controversial. But here it is, an article titled "Are you really pro-life?" I am 100% pro-choice, no question about it. And I looooooved this article. So don't be swayed by the title -- I find it fascinating for those on either side of the issue.
Since you guys got birthday updates midweek, I'm just going to focus on this weekend today. There were several play dates, a trip to an apple orchard (which was AMAZING) and a bleeding vizsla (we aren't sure if she cut her nose on the bottom of the fence when she was barking her head off at the neighbor dog or if that dog nipped her -- either way, a swollen snout and blood everywhere). The weather, by the by, has been GLORIOUS here in Minnesota. September might be my new favorite month!Photos are below -- enjoy!
Our friend Eric, walking with Ezra.
The orchard dog, Fletcher, loooved to play fetch. So much fun! The boys were enamored.
Ezra's favorite past time might be flirting with Betz. Which is wonderful.
We loved these mini adirondack chairs!
You can see the poor girl's bump above, and if you look close, the cut below.
This is super grainy and not in focus, but FISH FACE!
