another classic

So have you figured me out yet? I do have a thing for classic cars. You know what I would love to have? Either a late-60s mustang fastback (vroom!) or a VW bus with a camper and all that cool stuff inside. It would be so fun to haul friends to the drive-in in that, eh? But I stumbled upon this Dodge tonight on my way home from work and I loved the blue color and the classic lines. I prefer cars from the 60s/70s, but the detailing on these 50s models is pretty awesome (particularly the taillights). But back to the rest of my day. After racing home from a ridiculously long day at work (and spying this car to shoot), Jamie and I headed down to the Aster for Name That Tune with a large table full of friends. Now, you can imagine that most of my best friends are a) people I have met at concerts and b) music lovers of all kinds. But let me also mention that neither of those two qualifiers means someone will be good at Name That Tune. For instance, I totally and completely SUCK at it. I did correctly guess Dolly Parton's "Jolene," but man, I didn't get a single song right out of the Prince category -- and I'm a huge fan! (That said, could they not have chosen ONE song from Purple Rain? Seriously?)But despite my (and Jamie's) lack of talent in this particular arena, my real skillset shone through in my ability to recruit teammates. Because my buddy Pat KILLED IT at this game, and we came in second (hooray!). And we had a ton of laughs and a great time. Win-win situation, I tell you. And? I let Pat keep the prize with the promise that he would be on my team again in the future. I am a (competitive) genius.

summer dinner

I make damn good stir fry. Yeah, I know it's not hard to do, but man do fresh summertime ingredients make a difference. Tonight's version included linguini, carrots, red pepper, snap peas, broccoli, almonds, ginger, scallions, garlic, summer squash, green beans, cilantro and delicious peanut sauce. I told you it was good. That dish came after taking the dogs to the vet for their annual checkup, which leaves us all pretty wiped out. The good news is that the red welts on Memphis' belly are simply bug bites and that all the bloodwork is normal. The bad news is that after eight years of visits, the dogs are finally onto the vets not just being attentive strangers, and getting them to go near technicians with needles requires much more trickery.

so adorable

Look at this cutie pie. This is Loki, who I photographed at a client's house today while I was shooting photos of her family. Those eyes? Man. If that dog were mine, she would be spoiled rotten. After that shoot, I ran home to grab a quick bite before heading over to the Electric Fetus to see Dawes play. It was damn good to see those boys play live again. Their new album drops next month -- keep your eyes open for it.Oh, and if you want to see photos from the Dawes performance, they're up over here.

death cab for cutie

It only seemed fitting that we join all of our friends over at First Avenue for the night of the rapture, eh? Especially since we were all seeing/covering Death Cab for Cutie. And the club won an even warmer spot in my heart (wait, is that possible?) when at the strike of 6 p.m. they turned up the stereo and played "It's the End of the World As We Know It" by R.E.M. (Leonard Bernstein!)The show was ... fine. The openers, The Lonely Forest, was really fun to shoot. Lots of expressions and jumping and happy guys on stage. Death Cab was fine to shoot... but they're just not as excited and/or energetic, so while they sounded great, the photos were kinda dull. You can see for yourself over here. But I think what made me happiest tonight was seeing our buddies Eric and Betz out at their first show since having their baby ten days ago. I think that first outing must be really scary and hard, and they were great and we all loved seeing them and cracking jokes about Ben Gibbard's sweaty pants (seriously, the dude sweats a LOT).

It's raining a ton here right now, and all sorts of growth is happening in the yard. The ferns have just exploded! What I'm really excited for are the peonies. All the buds are growing, but I bet we have another month before the blooms open up. Aaaannnndd, that's about as much garden talk as you'll get from me. Tomorrow I'll be back at the rock'n'roll, I promise.
