Well, isn't she lovely?I got to photograph this beauty before her big dance last weekend. Because it was *freezing* outside on the day of our shoot, we decided to move everything into to the studio at the last minute. I didn't want this to look like a Sears portrait session (uh, sorry if any of my readers are photographers for that retailer...), so I decided to pitch something more editorial. And we had a blast! And I am so glad we did this. A little back story, Erin wanted to wear sneakers with her dress to the prom. Her mother wanted heels. We shot both.
For your internet shares of the day, flank steak is my favorite and I highly suggest you all make friends with it this summer. Also, I found the recipe for the best bbq sauce on the planet (from Salt Lick near Austin, of course). And I loved this article about slowing down summer for kids.
The weather on Saturday was FREEZING and we stayed in as much as we could and napped under big, wool blankets. Then on Sunday, everything changed and we were in the mid-60s and outside for almost all the hours of daylight. One of our excursions was to a nature preserve center, which Ezra loved even more than I thought he would.(Weren't the clouds outstanding yesterday?)
Ezra still loves reading the books about the potty. But he has zero interest in actually sitting on one. Sadly.
Saturday morning, our neighbor Kate came by and completely blew Ezra's mind with her charm, the toys she brought and her adorable nature. I think we have a crush.
Here he's paging through Keith Richards' autobiography. Maybe we should save that one for later, kid.
Here we are on our Sunday hike through the woods.
And, you know, just resting on a log.
For your internet share of the day, we've been enjoying this video a lot this week. It's only 3 minutes. Enjoy!
Three years ago today, I brought home this little lady to live with us. What a time that was... she would wake us up at 4:30 or 5 am to go for walks, and she would wake us up by clawing and biting at our faces. I remember thinking this must be what new parents of babies must feel like. Well... not really. Ezra might have woken me up at all hours for a full 14 mos., but he never attacked my face... so... (but he's not as good at snuggling as the Vizsla is, that's for sure).Anyway, today *also* marks 21 years since I asked Jamie out on our first date where we ate delicious chinese food and he plied me with Rolling Rock beer as we talked about music on a balcony overlooking a Burger King. You only dream of romance like that. But seriously, I got the best man on the planet and you'll have to find your own damn Romeo to buy you your Rolling Rock. For your internet share today (ladies), I bought this dress online this week and it arrived today and is as comfy as pajamas and I will likely live in it all summer. I invite you to do the same.
Today Jamie and I took a nice walk around the lake with Magda. And on this walk, we spied more baby geese! They are everywhere right now -- and it's so much fun! Where was The Spawn, you ask? He was in daycare. We have decided to take a day or two off each quarter where we spend time just as a couple. Sometimes we watch sports on TV. Sometimes we go to museums. Today, we walked around the lakes and had a delicious lunch before cozying up on the sofa and catching up on The Americans. It was glorious -- I highly suggest this form of cheap "vacation" for all parents. We have rules, like no chores allowed, no typical errands allowed etc etc. It is all about what we want to do, and it is glorious.A bit of a damper was that a former colleague of mine, who I always adored, unexpectedly passed away yesterday. You can read her obituary here. No internet shares today. Get off the computer and go hug the ones you love the most.
I had an early morning shoot today over in Plymouth, and we headed to this awesome little park near the family's home. When we arrived, I spotted a few geese, and then these adorable goslings. (Pronounced just like Ryan the celebrity, in case you were unaware.) Ezra's favorite book right now is about goslings, so I snapped this photo so he could see them up close.Oh, and do I have some internet shares for you today!+ Ever wonder what it would be like to be a surrogate mother? (I would love to think I would do this for a friend... but... yeah.)+ These photos and story of what some sailors saw at sea totally blew me away. I had no idea. I've looked at it more than once today.+ One of the many amazingly talented Minneapolis musicians dropped a new video today, and I love it. And it has me dancing in my chair. Turn up the volume, people.
I have a love/hate relationship with hostas. When we bought our house, they were EVERYWHERE in the back yard. And they were the kind of hostas I hate. Then we moved into the house with Memphis and Merlin and those beasts disregarded every kind of fencing we put around the yard and destroyed all the plants (even ferns, even hostas). And then a few years back I found some hostas that I actually liked, and I started planting them in again.I did this mainly because our backyard is super tough to grow things in (weird soil and the sun/shade ratio changes drastically as the season wears on), and hostas are ideal for that environment. Long story short? I love the hostas I have now, and I love how the light comes through them. And they are opening up right now in our yard, and I had to snap a photo.I have a few internet shares today:+ The latest stories on Humans of New York had me sobbing at my desk today. It's so important and so well done, and I will be donating to this cause. But seriously... it's heart wrenching.+ I don't think I will ever own a cabin up north, but if I did, it would look like this.+ I've been working out a ton lately. I do not look like this. (But I wish I did!) (Wait, I mean I wish I could do those moves and look that graceful -- not her actual body shape. Which is lovely! But for me to get that skinny would require very unhealthy choices.)
We had an amazing weekend around these parts -- lots of friends, lots of great food and lots of laughs. Ezra was in an *amazing* mood all weekend ... until he tried his very first lollipop (as seen above). That piece of candy was like a mainline of cocaine* straight to his brain and we probably won't be doing that again anytime soon. But I hope he enjoyed it while it lasted.
We started the weekend with sushi. Lesson learned: Order Ezra his own damn sushi because sharing doesn't work as he eats all of ours. But the good news is that he loves eel and avocado and shrimp and octopus and wow, what a kid!
Just a few shots from our room at the Japanese restaurant. I love those private dining experiences.
After dinner, Ezra played outside with Evie (who joined us with her parents for the meal!). Evie looks like a flower child from 1969 here, and I love it.
The weather this weekend has been phenomenal, so we practically lived in the backyard.
We started Mother's Day with Ezra deciding to push the vacuum cleaner around. YES, LET'S WORK ON THAT SOME MORE!
Then he got dressed for our brunch date and man-oh-man is he cute or what?
At brunch, he ate guacamole with a spoon. Who eats that for breakfast? My very own spawn, that's who. Jamie shot this image after we finished eating.
After brunch and nap time, our buddies Eric, Betz and Eero came over to hang out in the back yard. Eero was a total champ and helped Ezra with his trike (an played ball with the kid). It was a lovely afternoon, and we had a fantastic time.
And then we gave Ezra this piece of brain-changing organic material and he turned into a whirling dervish with a short temper and extreme frustration. Good thing we got him settled down by bedtime.*Sidenote: I have no idea what mainlining cocaine looks or feels like. I am making this statement based on lots and lots of television viewing.
So...I attended a photography workshop last week, which has really left me inspired. It has had me thinking about my work differently all week and pushing myself to go a little bit further and to get a little bit more out of each session. And while I've been thinking of stretching my limits, I decided to take another shot with film.Of course I started out with film (because I'm ancient), but once I got a digital camera, I grew so much as a photographer because I could see results instantly and learn from them. That said, the look of film just cannot be beat. And the magic of getting photos back and not remembering everything that was on the roll? That is an amazing feeling right there. So I dug out my old film camera (this one, for the curious) (yes, I wish it were black, but I'm not leaving it behind -- it takes great pictures!), and I ordered some film (above), and this week a new adventure begins. Wish me luck. For your internet shares:+ Arsenio Hall is suing Sinead O'Connor. Juicy stuff!+ Want to see some celebrity kitchens? Of course you do.+ Wouldn't it be nice to spend your weekend here?+ The latest beauty craze that I will probably try.
