Tonight we hit up movies and music at Lake Harriett. Mark Mallman and Star Wars! What a great combo! But I gotta say, come 10 pm, it was pretty chilly lakeside despite my three layers plus hat plus scarf plus gloves (plus wine). So we skipped out a little early. But at the beginning of the show I was shooting images of Mallman (always so great to photograph) and I turned and got a few shots of the water and the moon. Soooo beautiful.
Say it with me: Men-ahm-en-ah! That's who was playing a the Varsity tonight, and what a fun surprise! I have been listening to this album on-and-off for about a month at my desk, and it's a solid album, but nothing that I thought would be too exciting live. Tonight when I finally got to the show (after an ah-maaaaaazingly long -- yet educational -- day operating on four hours sleep) I expected to stay and shoot about three songs before coming home and collapsing into bed. Instead I stayed for the entire set! The band was much more powerful live than I was expecting. One of my favorite things was that they had pushed the drummer to the front of the stage, and man could he wail. I'll be posting more photos from this show on Friday afternoon. After I catch up on my sleep.*Note of something else exciting today that is not represented photographically: Tonight I also had a design... class? presentation? schooling?... over at Zeus Jones with Mr. Brad Surcey. He's about to give this seminar at design camp next week, and he wanted to do a run-through to test the timing and work out any kinks in his workshop. And what a great presentation! It made me want to run away from my day job and start designing packaging (which is something I've always wanted to get my hands into). But alas. I then made it out to the show and realized that my day job is pretty rockin', too. So no complaining here... the inner-package-designer in me will have to wait a bit.Update: The photos are up over here.
Tonight was Matt and Kim at First Avenue! Yes. I skipped Arcade Fire -- sue me. I have seen them three times (and loved every show), but I have a really hard time getting into bands when the venues get that big (and the sound that difficult). I prefer more intimate shows.Plus? My buddy Will was in town with Matt and Kim, and I wanted to catch up with him as well. Anyway, the show was super fun and the crowd was all born after 2000. OK, I'm exaggerating... but that's what it felt like. Also, Ms. Meredith let me drag her out, and we had a lot of fun. So good times all around! Maybe I'll get to hear about Arcade Fire tomorrow. After Jamie wakes up from his deep slumber (ah, the life of a non-blogger). The show photos are up over here. Knock yourselves out!
I was leaving work tonight when I ran into my good friend Nancy and her dog Sarah. What an amazing joy it is to see a pup at work! Anyway, she was having a picnic in the park across the street with another buddy of mine, and we all caught up for a bit, which was a nice end to the long and tedious day. I love how Sarah is begging for the food in this image. It captures her personality pretty well. But do you want to know what the most exciting part of my day was? Do you? Do you? Today I signed up for a community ed class with a few girlfriends. And not just ANY community ed class, but one that is going to TEACH US THE CHOREOGRAPHY TO THRILLER. I'm a little excited about this. I hope I can get a few photos in class next week. Woohoo!
Meet Rieley! We have known each other since we were about... maybe fourteen? Fifteen? Man, does this lady have some stories about me! Anyway, Riles was in town for business today, and she had a little time at the end of the day to meet for drinks. It's always so interesting to get back in touch with people who know where you're from and what your family is all about. And it's also so interesting to me how you can sit down to talk, and it's as if hardly any time at all has passed between the two of you. It's always comforting to remember that there are these people out there who know your roots, and understand your motivations in life. Anyway, it was good to catch up with this one, here.
I had a shoot this afternoon with a client that wanted some portraits of her and her mother. Wait. Is that right? She and her mother? Her mother and she? These are things that my own grandmother would surely correct me on... which always makes me question it. You know what? I'll just wait for one of her sons to post a comment with the correct answer. A little audience participation, if you will. ;)Anyway, we had this shoot today in the park (this is one of the outtakes), and her mother was so delightful. And she was all dressed up and had her hair and makeup just right. Something about seeing older women dressed up with the perfect lipstick always makes me happy. Aaaand, this was about all I did all day. The shoot only lasted about 45 minutes, but the rest of the day was spent cleaning and working and catching up on bad TV. Honestly? It was a pretty perfect Sunday.RANDOM NOTE: So hey, did y'all catch Mad Men tonight? That's one of my favorite shows and Oh My! That was about as good as the lawnmower episode! If you don't watch, you should. Seriously witty writing on that program.
