spruce

I ended my day over in South Minneapolis meeting up with some clients to deliver their wedding photos. This was super fun a) because I really like these two a lot and they have a great sense of humor and b) it's fun to give my freelance clients their work because they are usually grateful and happy and extremely complimentary. My day job is, um, lacking in that department.Today? Today was rough, as you might have picked up from my Twitter stream. I got home around 7 and had just enough time before heading out to review some math on a) how many years until retirement and b) if I really needed this day job after all. Yeah, it was that bad.But let's talk about this photo, shall we? This is Spruce, which is the *adorable* flower shop I stumbled upon while visiting with said clients tonight (it was across the street). Check out those beautiful succulents in the window! I am totally trying these guys out next time I need plants or flowers. The shop caught my eye because Brad designed the logo, and I remembered it, but had never seen the shop. Sometimes when Brad does something cool, he sends me the file for "feedback" which means "Leslie drools and fawns over the work and decides she is talentless and should just give up and start delivering pizzas." But seriously, he has mad skillz.Oh! And let me fill you in on Senior Plesser. Today he was able to talk! This was great news because they could ask more questions and get an idea of if/how his mind was affected by all of the trauma (it appears he's completely coherent, but not yet ranting about the Republicans... when that happens we will know we have returned to normalcy). It turns out he also got a sponge bath, but sadly from a male nurse. To go through all of that and end up with a male nurse?! Someone is getting ripped off, I tell you.But in all seriousness, the news out of Kansas City today was more of the good kind, and while still emotionally draining, at least in the very best of ways.

the september issue
0823targetsm.jpg

Well hello there. This is a total cheat. CHEAT. I AM A CHEATER. Today was so exhausting that I can barely keep my eyes open. And I got home around 7:30 (yes, that's late -- even for me) to be greeted by a hungry collie who needed to pee and The September Issue of Vogue in my mailbox. Eeeeek! Apologies to all the men out there, but this is one that I really, really look forward to. While I am no fashionista (my multitude of black concert t-shirts gets me kicked out of that club), I do love following design and trends and especially? FALL fashion. It takes me back to those days before the start of first semester when you got to go Back To School Shopping and boy, did I love that. My mom would drive me up to Kansas City so that I could shop at the Gap and Banana Republic and Sacks 5th Ave. since we had none of those in Wichita back then. Anyway, it's for those reasons that I look forward to this issue. But this photo! This photo is of the enormous ad spread that Target bought for their upcoming Missoni line. Oh my, am I excited for this line. I am absolutely in love with the blankets and throws they show in these images, and they will be mine, without a doubt (don't worry honey! Target! Less expensive!). The line goes on sale Sept. 13, but y'all need to stay home until Sept. 14 so I can get mine, mmmkay? And why am I a cheat? Because my photo is of someone else's beautiful photo. I apologize for that, but I really felt I needed to share the news about this line for those of you not following Target's design trends (hi Mom!).But before I sign off for the night to crawl into bed with this five pound magazine in my lap, I want to update you all on my father-in-law. Senior Plesser had a huge day today. He woke up! And they were able to remove the ventilator! And he can communicate (through nodding as he waits for his throat to heal from said ventilator). This was all so fantastic. When Jamie texted me with the news at my desk, tears were streaming down my face (happy tears! at work! what's that!?). I cannot tell you the relief I felt knowing he was conscious and communicative. Anyway, he's not completely out of the woods yet, but this was an enormous step in the right direction. Let's keep our fingers crossed that he has a fast and easy recovery. Lord knows there are a LOT of doctors out there who would be remiss without his advice on their golf swing ;)

please be sad?
0822desknotesm.jpg

This morning started with this amazing and super fun photo shoot for vita.mn that I cannot talk about but that I'm dying to talk about. But I can't. Just check out vita.mn on Sept. 1.Anyway, we were shooting in a first grade classroom, and one of the AMAZING AND TALENTED subjects we were photographing decided to open the desk (I'm sorry, "desch") she was sitting in and found this note. How adorable is this? Except for the "please be sad" part. I don't get that at all -- but the rest? Adorable. Also, no word on Jamie's dad yet. Nothing has changed, so we are still waiting. Tomorrow I head back to work at the paper -- let's hope I can focus.

the waiting game
0821lampsm.jpg

So today was pretty much just full of waiting. Jamie's father is in the ICU down in Kansas City, and I wanted to spend today tying up all loose ends so I would be ready to fly down and meet up with the family at a moment's notice. By noon I had vacuumed all three floors of the house, done all the dishes, folded two loads of laundry and put it all away, rescheduled all of the week's appointments and reorganized a closet. By two I had finished editing the wedding I'm currently working on and by 5:30 I had read an entire book cover to cover. (Can you hear my foot tapping wherever you are?)Being home alone waiting for the latest updates is driving me a little crazy. Maybe it's all my years at the newspaper, but I'm used to being the first to know, not the last. And, needless to say, I'm crazy worried about my father-in-law.So finally around 6:30, I decided I would leave the house and meet up with a few friends for dinner. After that, I wandered over to Mere's house to hear about the rest of the music festival and to see how she was doing. She was loading in her Flaming Lips photos, and man did that look like an amazing show to shoot. I almost wish I had stayed the weekend to do that. But you know. Camping. Not gonna happen. This photo is of one of the lamps in Mere's place. Her apartment is this completely bohemian little corner of paradise that is all mellow and relaxing. It was a nice place to hang out and unwind a little.

Oh, hello cutie. This sweetie left home tonight with her dad on an emergency trip to Kansas City. We're having a rough weekend around here, so if you all could send some good, positive thoughts this way, that would be awesome. Thanks guys.

oops
0819tosssm.jpg

Well hello! Back to our normally scheduled programming, eh? Today I was over at the SoundTown music fest, and this here is one of my very favorite live bands, Delta Spirit. You might recognize Matt from all the Middle Brother shots this spring, but then again, you might not as he has a shiny new haircut (and a shiny new wedding ring). They put on my favorite set of the day, and the only disappointment was that the festival was dead. I bet the ampitheater they played could hold 18,000. There might have been 3,000 there today. Yup, it was sad.A lot of my buddies were at the festival, and hey, they are still there because they are camping overnight and catching more music tomorrow. I am not a camper however (in any way, shape or form), so I came home and will be snuggled in under my down comforter this evening not listening to the sound of wasted campers stumbling through the park. And I am A-OK with that decision.*This post is titled "oops" because Matt did not, in fact, catch the guitar. To see more shots from the day, including his face when this guitar fell through his hands, check back tomorrow morning when I post a full set. How's that for some enticement? look here.

I ran back to Zeus Jones this morning to snap some photos of new employees, and I wanted to get another shot of Ms. Sara here as well. Isn't she adorable? Yup.The rest of the day was spent processing wedding photos. I know, I know. This week is so boring! But tomorrow? Tomorrow I'll treat you guys to some good old rock'n'roll. (And yes, it's about damn time.)
