Man, do I love my family. Today, Jamie was talking to his mom on the phone and Magda was following Merlin around kissing his face and driving him crazy. This is particularly funny to us because Merlin used to follow Memphis around doing the same thing -- although she liked it. She sat there and took it like he was her man-slave giving her a facial. Merlin though? He prefers to groom himself, thankyouverymuch. The rest of the day was spent taking long walks, reading, running short errands and napping. So yeah, it was awesome. And now, for your internet share of the day, I'm going to share with you the origin of Matthew McConaughey's "All right, all right, all right." This is yet ANOTHER reference to Dazed and Confused (yes, for all you who missed it, that was the film I referenced yesterday). If you caught the Oscars, then you know McConaughey ended his acceptance speech with this catchphrase, at which point I squealed on the couch.
Today the Veronica Mars movie came out (yay!!) and Jamie was under strict instructions to take me to the theater to see it on our date night. But... the 8 pm showing was sold out. So we opted for the early 5:40 showing instead and then grabbed dinner at the mall after. While walking to our car, this was the scene. First off, I feel about ninety three years old for wrapping up the date before dark and second, this shot reminded me of "Party at the Moontower -- spread the word!"And if you don't get that reference, then maybe YOU are 93 years old, not me. Or maybe you are twenty. Who knows. For those of you who do get the reference, you are my people. For my internet share of the day, I'm showing you my very favorite new commercial that I saw on TV today. Oh Subaru, this is gold.
So my boots came from Zappos today, and now I need to decide which ones to keep. The orange ones are super comfortable (and my favorite color), but they are a touch less flattering and they are $60 more than the teal ones. The teal ones are also very comfy, and I love that they have a small heel which dresses them up just a bit. Both look to be made really, really well. And I would love your feedback in the comments...For today's internet share, I'm sending you to watch Don Draper photo bomb some tourists with Jimmy Fallon. It appears Fallon is just killing it lately, no? But seriously, how come Don Draper never says hi to me when I'm in New York? We need to fix that. Stat.
I promise I'm doing more than just eating these days... it's just that the food has been so dang good lately that I want to share it with you!Tonight we met up with our friends Steve and Jen for a pizza dinner before they have their second baby in 3 weeks. Wait, I mean their second baby is due in 3 weeks... not that she's given birth twice in 3 weeks. Whatever. You understand me, right? They live right near Pizzeria Lola, so we decided on dinner there, and holy mother of god have I told you how good their food is? Hands down, my favorite pizza is the Boise (cheese, potatoes and the sweetest, most delicious caramelized onions ever), but the Korean BBQ pizza (on the left, above) is also amazing. I mean, really, there is nothing bad at this joint. For my internet share of the day, I'm sending you to this AMAZING behind-the-scenes read about the Oscars. My favorite excerpt? Ok, try this one on for size:Brad Pitt smells amazing, like nothing I've ever smelled. Eventually we ask what cologne he's wearing and he tells us, "I don't wear cologne, it's just my musk I guess."Psh. "Oh, it's just my musk, I guess."
Yum! This was my dinner from Barbette tonight. Remember when I taught you how to make my steak au poivre? This is what I was trying to master right here and it just turned into my own steak fantasy. Barbette serves my favorite steak in town, and holy cow am I full right now. Jamie and I met up with a friend who was in town from Chicago, and we were treated to an amazing dinner and fabulous conversation. A perfect way to spend a Tuesday. For your internet share today, did you know there is an abandoned outdoor movie theater in the Sinai Desert that has never once been used? SOMEONE DO A FASHION SHOOT HERE STAT.
First, before we get any further, I have to tell you that as I type this my office window is open and it is FIFTY FOUR DEGREES OUTSIDE. Oh my, this is so exciting. I took the dogs for a walk today, but you guys, it was tragically sloppy out there. I had to double back about five different times due to "sidewalk lakes" that were unpassable. So what did this girl do? She went back home and ordered some cute new rain boots. Glass half full! The photo above was actually snapped late Saturday night/Sunday morning after the Arcade Fire show. I had already blogged, and when I got out of the shower and came to bed all warm in my pjs this was what I found (except Mags was asleep). So I tiptoed back downstairs to grab my camera and when I came back up, she heard me. Ah well, still a very cute snuggly moment. As for this girl, clearly I spoke too soon about the slippers. While she's been hoarding our things for months now, the day after I put in writing that she didn't destroy them, she ate one of my slippers. Grrrr... So now we really have to monitor what she takes to her nest. Also, yesterday we had a monstrous trip to Ikea for basement goods and when we returned, Miss Magda greeted us at the back door. Which was odd because when we left she had been locked in her crate. Ahem.Turns out, she figured out an escape route (likely because it appears Mom forgot to clasp one of the two carabiners). Anyway, we quickly surveyed the home for damage and we were pleased nothing seemed amiss. Until the phone rang and we discovered she had chewed it to bits. Thank goodness one of us works at an electronics retailer and can get another one. Also I should note this was a cordless phone, not a cell phone. Yes, we still have a land line. Yes, we are old-school like that. For your internet share of the day, how about these views of Manhattan from the new WTC building? And you can move around and change your view! And if heights scare the crap out of you (like me), you might get a touch queasy. Sorry about that.
Good morning! For today's Savory Sunday post, I decided on breakfast tacos because a) many, many, many of my friends are likely a touch hung over after the Arcade Fire show last night, b) they are a bit of a shout-out to those of us not making it down to Texas for SXSW but who still like tacos and c) you can have them for breakfast, lunch or dinner! They are among my very favorites, and I usually have all of the ingredients on hand so it's a fantastic last-minute brunch idea.
So, let's get started. First, you'll need these ingredients for four tacos:• four flour tortillas (I like the smaller ones)• four eggs• handful of fresh cilantro• one avocado• 2 tbs butter• 2 tbs olive oil• your favorite salsa
Begin by heating the olive oil and once hot, browning the tortillas. I get them about like above, flip them and then set them on paper towels to drain while you do the rest.
This is what they look like finished. I am here to tell you that browning these tortillas is the secret ingredient to all the best tacos in the world. I promise.
After the tortillas are brown, you want to scramble your eggs. People! I make the best scrambled eggs in the universe. I know this dish doesn't seem hard, but follow these instructions and you will have the fluffiest, most delicious eggs ever. I promise.
Scramble the eggs in a bowl. Just the eggs. No milk, no water, nada. While doing this, melt the butter in a sauce pan. NOT A FRYING PAN. Trust me.
Go get your baking spatula (as seen above) and stir in the eggs with the melted butter over medium-low heat. Keep stirring. Do not stop stirring. They will start to thicken like this.
When you think they are almost done but maybe just need "a few seconds more" take them off the heat. Your eggs will continue to cook even off the heat and this will make them perfect. I promise. This is also the best time to add salt and pepper to taste to them.
Now that your eggs are finished, mash up one avocado with a fork and then spread it over a tortilla like so.
Add in the eggs, your favorite salsa and a bit of fresh cilantro and you are done! SO TASTY AND PRETTY.
Each taco is about 368 calories. But be careful, I could eat about seven of these things. And for your internet share of the day, how about I send you to a home-made recipe for nacho cheese Doritos! I'm sure these are good, but they seem like too much work for me. I think I'd rather just buy a bag. But if you're worried about the ingredients, here's how to make your own!
Today I had an assignment to photograph some of the fashion at the Arcade Fire concert (which I will link to later this week). Since I didn't have tickets, and I didn't have permission to bring my camera into the arena (I wasn't shooting the show), I decided to get there early and shoot photos of the 100 to 200 people lined up early for the show. I figure if they're lining up in the afternoon, they're gonna dress up as well. And luckily, I was right!Around 6:40 they opened the doors to the arena and right before this, "the band," who you can see above in these masks, came through waiving to everyone waiting in line. Is it really Arcade Fire? People seemed to think so. Do I think so? Not sure. But it was funny regardless. And then we magically scored free tickets to watch the show from a friend's box (!!) and so we ended up staying at the show for free. SCORE. It was a fun show. But they were way more fun in 2003 at the 400 Bar. And yes, I sound exactly like my Music Snob friend Kyle when I say that, but it's true. For your internet share of the day, I'm sending you to this piece about stopping and being kind. I love this essay, and I think what Nora has to say is super important. Every single one of us is dealing with some sort of issue or another, so how about we just be nice for a change?
